La Sagouine, legendary character
photo personnagelegendaire

La Sagouine, one of Antonine Maillet's great characters, has become a spokesperson for the Acadian people. This woman of modest origins possesses unremitting logic and a pure and honest view of the world. With her old-fashioned, rare and poetic words, she brings us back to the essential: human dignity.

The Characters of Le Pays de la Sagouine

At Le Pays de la Sagouine, you will meet year after year characters issued from Antonine Maillet's books. They can be seen and heard at the dinner theatres and also on the island during the day, talking with the visitors.

C'est point d'aouère de quoi qui rend une parsoune bénaise, c'est de saouère qu'a va l'aouère.

Stéphanie…or the Sagouine with the multiple accents

During the next few days we are offering you our blogger’s impressions upon seeing our Sagouine apprentices during rehearsals. Happy Reading!

She’s a small thing with long hair; a face still so smooth. But, when she opens her mouth, many, many stories are revealed. Her accent is her own and she keeps it intact, unmistakably showing her Nova Scotia roots. She’s quite right in telling me that the Sagouine has been and still is universal.

...Ah! course I know the Good Lord is infinitively good 'n infinitively kind 'n that he's just. Has to be, 'r he wouldn't be a Good Lord.1

Patricia…or the Sagouine with the wide grin

During the next few days we are offering you our blogger’s impressions upon seeing our Sagouine apprentices during rehearsals. Happy Reading!

When Patricia Léger walks on stage, her demeanor alone tells us that we’re dealing with a Sagouine who’s been around. She has a resigned approach, naturally ready for work. When she lifts her head to look at her audience, we discover that the Sagouine who is on stage, despite having had a hard life, has decided that these setbacks won’t affect her humor and her goodwill.

Cause it didn' make no difference who took care of our business, they couldn' take more than what we had, 'n we had not'n.1
